This is Our Story
One afternoon while visiting my grandmother, we found ourselves reminiscing about dogs. My grandma, who has been navigating the challenges of rapidly progressing dementia in recent years, began recalling cherished memories from before her illness. She spoke fondly of the chihuahuas she once had, her eyes sparkling as she described how much joy they brought her.
She shared how, despite their small size, they were bursting with personality. “They were barkers,” she said with a laugh, “but they were such good dogs.” What she adored most was their snuggly nature—always eager to cuddle.
Her deep affection for chihuahuas inspired me to give her a special surprise. I decided to find a chihuahua, train it, and eventually gift it to her.
But, as life often does, my plan hit an unexpected snag. I found a seller with chihuahuas available, and everything seemed to align perfectly. Then, out of the blue, the seller sold all the puppies to someone else. I was crushed.
It felt like such a disappointment.
Not long after, my cousin reached out with an intriguing lead. “I heard you’re looking for a chihuahua for Grandma,” she said. “A coworker told me her boyfriend’s mom is selling puppies.”
Hopeful again, I asked for a photo of the puppy. When the picture arrived, my heart sank. It wasn’t a chihuahua. Grandma had made it very clear—she wanted another chihuahua, nothing else.
Still, I couldn’t look away from the photo. There was something about this little pup that tugged at my heartstrings. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t a chihuahua; I felt an instant connection. That’s when it hit me—this puppy wasn’t meant for Grandma. This puppy was meant for me. I’ve always had a soft spot for small dogs, and this little one felt like she was exactly what I needed.
Without a second thought, I messaged my cousin: “She’s SOLD! I’m buying her.”
Her reply came almost immediately: “No way, REALLY?”
“Yep,” I wrote back. “I’m picking her up in a few days.”
First time Jack Owner
Welcoming a Jack Russell Terrier into my life for the first time has been nothing short of incredible. Before bringing my girl home, I knew very little about the breed. Determined to be prepared for this new adventure, I spent countless hours researching and reading everything I could. I soaked up every piece of information I could find about the breed. My previous encounters with Jack Russells had been less than encouraging—they weren’t the friendliest dogs, which left me with some reservations about the breed.
Honestly, I never imagined I’d own a Jack Russell. Based on what I’d heard and seen, they didn’t seem like the right fit for me. But, as I’ve come to realize, a dog’s behaviour often has more to do with how they’re raised and the love they’re given than the breed itself. But most of all your “ENERGY”
The opportunity to bring this little girl into my life came unexpectedly, and I didn’t hesitate for a second. I brought her home in April 2020, right in the midst of all the global chaos. The timing felt both right and wildly impulsive! To be completely honest, I used money that was earmarked for my hydro bill to bring her home. But looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made—and don’t worry, I still managed to pay that bill!
Picking Mia Up
It was a two-hour drive to get her, and no one at home had a clue what I was up to. Early Saturday morning, I quietly left the house with my mom without saying a word. Since my mom works as a cleaner, it wasn’t unusual for me to tag along and help her from time to time. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what everyone assumed I was doing—if only they knew how wrong they were! (LOL)
A couple of hours later, I walked back into the house, cradling the sweetest little girl in my arms.
It just felt like fate.
There’s a saying that goes:
**You don’t pick the dog; the dog picks you.**
Now, I don’t know how true that saying really is,
BUT...
When I arrived at the owner’s house and stepped inside, this sweet little girl did everything she could to get to me. Her owner mentioned that plenty of people had visited to see her before, but she never showed any interest in them.
The owner picked her up one last time to say goodbye,
BUT... she squirmed and wiggled in their arms, desperate to get to me. The moment I held her, she covered me in kisses. It felt as though she had been waiting for me all along.
It truly was meant to be.
At the time, her name was Bean. The owner asked if I planned to keep it, but I wasn’t entirely sure.
On the drive home, I tossed around a few names in my head before landing on Mia-Bean.
I had always dreamed of having a dog named Mia—it just had to be the right one. And now, Mia-Bean (or simply Mia) was the perfect match.
Bringing Mia Home
When I arrived home, the kids were wonderful. They barely paid attention to the puppy, which was exactly what I had hoped for. I gently reminded them to give her space and not to overwhelm her, allowing her the time she needed to settle in comfortably.
Experts say it generally takes around 72 hours for a new dog to adjust to their new environment. This critical period helps them decompress and process the overwhelming stimuli they face during their first few days at home.
In our case, I gave her two full days to settle before starting any training. I’m truly amazed at how quickly she’s picked up everything I’ve introduced so far—it’s been incredible to witness her progress.
She’s adventurous, intelligent, loving, and fiercely loyal, with a natural drive that sets her apart.
It’s clear she’s shaping up to be an extraordinary addition to our family and a remarkable example of her breed.
